Introduction to JMP

Starting JMP

To begin, open the folder called "JMP IN" on the computer's hard drive. In Gildemeister this is labeled "Macintosh HD", in Somsen it's labeled "Somsen 207D".

To start JMP double click the "JMP IN" icon in this folder. When JMP starts you will see an empty data spreadsheet and the menu at the top of the screen should read from left to right: File, Edit, Tables, Rows, Cols, Analyze, Graphs, Tools and Window.

Accessing Class Data from the Gildemeister Mac Lab

If the data archive folder is already on the desktop when you sit down at the computer you do not need to go through this process.

    1. Select "Chooser" from the Apple menu (in upper left corner of screen, looks like a technicolor apple).
    2. Select "Appleshare" from the window that opens after selecting "Chooser".
    3. Select "MathLab 1 Server" from the list of servers on campus that appears on the right and click "OK".
    4. Log-on to the server as "Guest", then highlight the Data folder and click "OK". An icon for the Data archive will appear on the desktop.
    5. Open the archive by double-clicking on the "Data" icon on the desktop.
    6. Open our class data by double clicking on the "Callahan STAT 110" folder icon.

Accessing Class Data from the Somsen Mac Lab

If the data archive folder is already on the desktop when you sit down at the computer you do not need to go through this process.

    1. Select "Network Browser" from the Apple menu (in upper left corner of screen, looks like a technicolor apple).
    2. Double-click "MathLab 1 Server" from the list of servers.
    3. Log-on to the server as "Guest". A list of folders now will appear below "Mathlab 1 Server" in the Network Browser. Open the archive by double-clicking on the "Data" icon and a "Data" icon will appear on the desktop.
    4. Open our class data by double clicking on the "Callahan STAT 110" folder icon in the Data foler.

Entering Data

Under the "File" menu select "New". A new spreadsheet will appear with only one column. As a first example we will enter the data found in Table 2.2 on page 23 of the text.

We need two columns in our spreadsheet to enter this data, one for the type of aphasia and one for the number of subjects of that type. To add columns to a spreadsheet simply double click to the right of the first column.

Before you enter data you must specify the type of data each column will hold. To do this double click between the two boxes at the top of Column 1. A window will open up that will allow you to change the name of the column, the data type and other attributes. For Column 1 change the name to "Aphasia Type" and change the data type to "Character". Change the "Field Width" to 15 since some of the names are lengthy. For Column 2 change the name to "# of Subjects" and leave the data type as "Numeric".

The data in Column 2 is numeric data, and more particularly it is frequency data. We need to tell JMP this. At the top of Column 2 are two small boxes. The one on the right is the role assignment pop-up menu. Click on this box once and select the "Freq" option.

Finally before we enter the data you need to add rows to the spreadsheet. At the top of the screen select the "Row" pull down menu and then select "Add Rows". Change the "# of Rows to add" to 3 and click "Add". Now use the mouse, return key and/or the mouse to move about the spreadsheet and enter the data. When you are finished your spreadsheet should look like:

Rows

Aphasia Type

# of Subjects

1

Broca's

5

2

Conduction

7

3

Anomic

10

Making a Graph

    1. Analyze -> Distribution of Y
    2. Click on "Aphasia Type" once and click "Add"
    3. Click OK
    4. Print the resulting graph and pass it in as part of the homework assignment.

NBA Dataset

    1. File -> Open
    2. Open the file "NBA.JMP" in the class data directory. Towards the top of the window that opens select "Desktop", then "Data" and then "Callahan STAT 110". You should now see the "NBA.JMP" file. Double click on it to open it.
    3. Analyze -> Distribution of Y
    4. Click on "Salary" and then on the "Add" button
    5. Click "OK"
    6. Print the resulting graph and pass it in as part of the homework assignment.
    7. Click on some of the outliers in the box-and-whisker plot. Notice the name of the player pops up. Who were the two highest paid players in the NBA in the 1997-1998 season?

Closing JMP

File->Quit

Mac Notes

At the top right of the Mac screen is a small icon. If you click on this icon you will see a list of programs that are currently running on the Mac. If a program other than JMP becomes active, or if you are not sure if JMP is currently running, use this icon to select JMP as the active program.

You will avoid problems if you close all programs except "Finder" and "Painted Black" (in the Gildemeister lab) before starting your work. Select each program one at a time and then select File -> Quit.

If you receive the message "This name has already been taken. Please choose another" type in any name you like and hit Return.

Sometime the initial JMP screen that announces JMP will not go away until you click on it.

You can also start JMP by double-clicking on any JMP file (data files)
