Accessing Class Data

There are two basic methods of accessing class data. You can access data over the Macintosh network. To use this method you must be using a Mac on campus. Using this method you will get the data from a Mac server named MathLab 1 that is maintained by the Math/Stat department.

You can also access class data over the internet. Using this method you will get the data from the computer that hosts our class webpages. You can use this method from any computer including Macs in the Mac labs on campus.

The datasets should be identical regardless of how you access the data.

Accessing Class Data over the Internet

Class data is available on the class website at http://www.edcallahan.com/stat110/data/index.htm.

If you are using Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer on a PC (meaning not a Mac) you can just click on a link to the dataset and you will be prompted for where you want to save the file. Save the file anywhere on your hard drive you like and select that location when opening the file with JMP.

When using Netscape Navigator on a Mac click on the link to the data file. Garbage will come up on the screen. But click File -> Save As and save the file to your hard drive.

In MS Explorer on a Mac you have to use File -> Download File. You would then need to enter the URL, such as http://www.edcallahan.com/stat110/data/statedeath.jmp to save the file to your hard drive.

On the Mac, when your ready to open the file you saved in JMP you'll need to click File -> Open. A screen will come up that allows you to pick your file. Make sure you click the box next to "Show all files" before you go looking for the one you just saved.

I have not tested the above procedures on all possible versions of Netscape or MS Explorer. I've had reports of this procedure not working from users of AOL. If these instructions don't work for you please let me know which program you were using and its version number.

Accessing Class Data from the Gildemeister Mac Lab

If the data archive folder is already on the desktop when you sit down at the computer you do not need to go through this process.

    1. Select "Chooser" from the Apple menu (in upper left corner of screen, looks like a technicolor apple).
    2. Select "Appleshare" from the window that opens after selecting "Chooser".
    3. Select "MathLab 1 Server" from the list of servers on campus that appears on the right and click "OK".
    4. Log-on to the server as "Guest", then highlight the Data folder and click "OK". An icon for the Data archive will appear on the desktop.
    5. Open the archive by double-clicking on the "Data" icon on the desktop.
    6. Open our class data by double clicking on the "Callahan STAT 110" folder icon.
